"NAIROBI, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has launched investigations into the death of a black rhino in the Lake Nakuru National Park.

KWS spokesman Paul Udoto said the five-year-old female rhino fell and died with a dart on the rear back on Sunday.

"Rangers on patrol had come across the female rhino which was running and suddenly fell on its four legs in a crouching position. They tried to resuscitate it without success. On further examination, a dart was found on its back," Udoto said Wednesday.

He said the rhino horn had since been recovered, dart retrieved and that investigations to ascertain the direction the dart was shot from and the contents were underway.

"KWS rangers are combing the area for clues while veterinary doctors have conducted a post-mortem examination into the possible cause of death of the rhino," said Udoto.

It brings to four the number of black rhinos killed in the past three weeks across the East African nation and the KWS has increased wildlife security efforts to curb rising incidents of poaching.

The conservationists have decried the entry of organized crime syndicates into the illegal wildlife trade, most notably of rhino horn and elephant ivory, which they said, has created a crisis situation in many African countries.

The KWS on its part has expressed fears that the recent spike in poaching which has contributed to the depletion of wildlife including elephants, lions and rhinos, are threatening many years of conservation efforts and animal populations that had started to balloon".
